I took the above photo last night in Surf City, NJ after the line of thunderstorms rolled through. The most common reports from most were just brief periods of moderate-to-heavy rainfall with a few boomers. Some however saw damaging winds. Here’s the official NWS storm damage report.
This week should start warmer with a few rain and storm chances. We’ll then cool down heading into the weekend. Colin will be crossing northern Florida and heading out to sea well to our south. Colin’s backside however will be partly responsible for pulling down some cooler and drier air behind. A cold frontal passage will seal the deal for cooler temperatures Wednesday-forward. Let’s break it down:
Monday (June 6) high temperatures should reach the low-to-mid 80s for most. The SNJ coast could possibly be held in the upper-70s. Skies should be mostly sunny with a drier feel than yesterday. Winds should be light out of the W/SW. Overnight lows should fall into the 60s statewide.
Tuesday (June 7) high temperatures should reach the low-to-mid 80s for most. The SNJ coast could possibly be held in the upper-70s again. Skies should be mostly sunny to start. A passing cold front later in the day could bring some rain and storms to the region. Winds should be light out of the W. Overnight lows should fall into the 50s statewide (possibly just 60s along the coast) as winds pick up and shift slightly to the W/NW.
Wednesday (June 8) high temperatures should only just break 70 away inland and be held to the 60s along the coast. Skies should feature a mixed bag of sun, clouds, rain showers and possibly a few thunderstorms as some weak energy moves through from NW to SE. Winds should be breezy-to-gusty out of the W/NW. Overnight lows should fall into the 50s for most (possibly into the 40s for NNJ elevations).
Thursday (June 9) high temperatures should reach into the 70s for most. NNJ elevations might be held in the 60s due to continued NW flow. Skies should be mostly sunny. Winds should remain breezy-to-gusty out of the NW as high pressure settles into the TN valley area. Overnight lows should fall into the 50s for most (possibly into the 40s for NNJ elevations and ~60 along the SNJ coast).
Friday (June 10) high temperatures should reach into the 70s statewide. Skies should be mostly sunny and pleasant. Winds will be relaxed but still out of the W/NW. Overnight lows should fall into the 50s statewide.
An early look at the weekend indicates a better Sunday than Saturday. Let’s revisit this later in the week when short range model guidance comes into focus. Have a great week and be safe! JC
