Discussion: Thursday night’s rain was the early signal of the approaching front and the lifting that surrounds such. The cold front should be slow moving over the next 24-30 hours. Monday it might only bring relief to NWNJ (down to the I-95 corridor at most). The front likely won’t clear SENJ completely until Tuesday afternoon. Rain and thunderstorms are therefore possible all of Monday through Tuesday morning. Thunderstorms have severe criteria and flash flooding potential. Once the front clears all of NJ (by Tuesday afternoon) some relief is on the way. I imagine Tuesday night through Thursday morning will feel magical after the heat and humidity we just endured. We’re looking at dew points in the 50s and 60s rather than 70s and low-80s. You’ll feel the difference. The weekend then looks pretty good as of right now with reasonable warmth and humidity building back in. Highs in the upper-80s and dews in the mid-to-upper 60s kind of stuff.
Monday (July 22) high temperatures should range from near-80 to near-90 NNJ to SNJ. Skies should be partly sunny and humid to start. Basically NWNJ improves first and SENJ last. Rain and thunderstorms are possible for most of the day. Winds should light-to-breezy out of the SW unless under/near a storm cell. Overnight lows should range from lower-60s to lower-70s NNJ to SNJ as rain and thunderstorms persist.
Tuesday (July 23) high temperatures should reach the mid-to-upper 70s. Skies should start mostly cloudy and rainy with remnant storm energy. Conditions should improve by afternoon and especially by evening. This should signal the departure of the relentless humidity. Winds should be light out of the N/NW. Overnight lows should range from mid-50s to mid-60s NNJ to SNJ.
Wednesday (July 24) high temperatures should reach near-80 for most areas. Skies should be mostly sunny and pleasant. Winds should be light out of the N. Overnight lows should range from mid-50s to mid-60s NNJ to SNJ.
Thursday (July 25) high temperatures should reach the low-to-mid 80s for most areas. Skies should be partly-to-mostly sunny and pleasant. Winds should be light out of the W/NW. Overnight lows should range from upper-50s to upper-60s NNJ to SNJ.
Friday (July 26) high temperatures should reach the mid-to-upper 80s for most areas. Skies should be mostly sunny with some humidity returning. Normal summer humidity not the crap we just saw. Winds should be light out of the S/SW. Overnight lows should fall into the 60s for most areas.
An early look at the weekend indicates highs in the mid-to-upper 80s and lows in the mid-to-upper 60s for most areas. As of right now it looks mostly dry. Let’s take another look in a few days. Have a great week and please be safe! JC
