Perfect Chowderfest Weather – This Weekend!

Long Beach Island’s Chowderfest should see amazing “fall soup weather” this weekend. This family fun festival features live music, craft vendors, activities and unlimited Chowder tasting with the opportunity for each ticket holder to vote for their favorite red and white chowder. The event is nestled in Beach Haven, New Jersey surrounded by beautiful views of the bay and plenty of year-end discounted shopping. For all event details please visit the official LBI Chowderfest web site.

Weather Discussion: The front side of a weak upper-level ridge will establish cooler flow out of the NW aloft. At the surface an area of high pressure will track from the Great Lakes area either over NNJ or just to the north of NNJ and out into the Atlantic Ocean over the weekend. This will produce a cooler Saturday with flow rocking from N/NE to SE and a milder Sunday with flow rocking from SE to S (anti-cyclonic flow and positioning of high). Both days look dry from rain. At least some cloud coverage is likely, especially Saturday, as warmer air moves off the ocean and collides with colder air inland. This should assist the condensation process aloft. Humidity should be low and fall vibes should be high! You’ll want to dress warmer for Saturday. Just a note for vendor setup…rain is expected Thursday night into early Friday morning. The rain should end by late-Friday morning, if not by daybreak, and be clear for the rest of the event weekend. Northerly winds Friday afternoon and overnight will evaporate and dry the event grounds nicely by Saturday morning. Here is the broken down event forecast:

Saturday, October 5 “The FREE ENTRY Merchant Mart Day” – When the gates open at 10am, temperatures should be slowly climbing upwards through the 50s. Afternoon peak temperatures should only reach into the lower-60s before Merchant Mart concludes at 5pm near-60. Skies should be mixed with sun and friendly “fall” clouds off the ocean. Winds should be light-to-breezy—starting out of the N/NE and switching clockwise to SE. Saturday will be the colder of the two days so I recommend dressing warmer/layering/etc. The soup will keep you warm inside but prepare for what could seem blistery for some especially coming off the recent local summer heat.

Sunday, October 6 “The Ticket Entry Chowderfest Contest” – Expect another morning on the cool/crisp side (recommend layering if you’re trying to make the 11am gate opening). Temperatures should eventually climb to near-70, maybe lower-70s, in the afternoon as the event concludes at 4pm. Skies should be mixed with sun and clouds with a comfortable feel. Winds could be breezy at times out of the S/SE. Again Sunday will be the milder of the two days that make up this awesome event.

I hope everyone has a great time at Chowderfest this year! Maybe I’ll see you there. Be safe! JC
