Mixed Conditions Expected

Discussion: I’m seeing mostly ridging this week over the E US including NJ. This will allow temps and humidity to build today and especially tomorrow before a stormfront pushes through from N to S, driven by high pressure to our N. This will give us a break in temperatures (highs in 70s) and a little humidity relief for Thursday and Friday (SNJ might hang onto humidity) but humidity is then expected to return for the weekend (Labor Day weekend) with temps moderating back to the lower-80s. There is a strong cold front showing for Sept 1-2 that should remind us even harder that Fall is on the way. And that relief/beautiful weather should last at least through the first week of September before temps moderate back. But by that time we are starting to face climatological and sun-angle issues that prevent any more heat waves from occurring outside of extremely rare cases over the years. So IMO, I would enjoy these last two hotter summery days (Today and tomorrow), prepare for thunderstorms Wednesday PM into Thursday morning, then enjoy the cooler Thursday-Friday. Lastly, the front of Labor Day weekend looks better for outdoor stuff than Sunday-Monday does. So, soak as much end of summer activities in as you can until the fallish cold front comes through between Sunday and Monday.

Tuesday (Aug 27) high temperatures should reach near-90 for much of NJ, especially WCNJ/SWNJ. Coastal regions closer to 80. Skies should be mostly sunny with a humid feel. Some sea breeze front clouds possibly around in SNJ/SENJ. Winds should be very light out of the W. Overnight lows should range from 65-70 from NNJ elevations to SNJ coasts.

Wednesday (Aug 28) high temperatures should reach well into the 90s. Wouldn’t be surprised to see near-100 in the warmer W/SW NJ spots. Otherwise, near-90 for elevations and coasts. Elevated humidity will make it feel even hotter. Skies should be mixed with sun and clouds. Thunderstorms, possibly severe, are possible mainly for afternoon hours with N and W NJ parts favored over S and E parts. Winds should be light out of the W (unless under or near a thunderstorm). Overnight lows should range from 60-70 from NNJ elevations to SNJ coasts.

Thursday (Aug 29) high temperatures should reach the mid-to-upper 70s for most NJ locations. A cooler and more comfortable feel than Monday-Tuesday. Skies should be mixed with sun, clouds, and a few passing afternoon/evening showers and thunderstorms. Winds should be light out of the E, a little breezier along the ECNJ/SENJ coasts. Overnight lows should range from 55-60 from NNJ elevations to SNJ coasts.

Friday (Aug 30) high temperatures should reach the mid-to-upper 70s for most NJ locations. Skies should be mixed with sun and clouds. Winds should remain light out of the E. Overnight lows should range from upper-50s to upper-60s from NNJ elevations to SNJ coasts.

An early look at the weekend (Aug 31-September 1) indicates highs near-80, maybe low-80s but with elevated humidity. Looks slightly unsettled (isolated showers and thunderstorms) with Saturday slightly more unsettled than Sunday. Let’s revisit in a few days.
