A Mixed Bag of Conditions

Discussion: The upper jet should dip over NJ this weekend but not too far S of NJ…more right over as a weak trough. This will allow a disturbance to pass through and bring rain, possibly thunderstorms, to NJ between late tonight (Friday night) and Saturday evening. Not expecting much until after midnight tonight. Rain and storms clear with the departing trough Saturday night and puts NJ under the back of the shallow trough for Sunday which means colder winds out of the W/NW but drier conditions. The jet then returns N of NJ for next week and allows milder temperatures to spread across the region until a possible frontal system pushes through later in the week to open up a nicer next weekend. For this weekend, this evening looks good until clouds move in. Saturday looks unsettled. Sunday looks clear, cool and breezy.

Forecast

Friday (April 25) high temperatures (as of 5pm Friday) looks like they have maxed near-80 in the I-95 area between Philly and New Brunswick. The rest of NJ, away from the ocean, are in the 70s while the coast hangs in the 60s, some upper-50s from marine influence. Skies should remain fair through early evening with clouds gradually increasing. Rain is expected later tonight into tomorrow. Winds should remain light-to-breezy out of the S. Overnight lows should fall to the 55-60 range as rain, possibly a few boomers, start up for Saturday.

Saturday (April 26) high temperatures should reach the low-to-mid 70s for most NJ locations. Skies should be cloudy with rain and embedded thunderstorms possible. It looks like NNJ/CNJ should see the first main batch of rain first with SNJ a little later in the day. But the entire day looks unsettled. Winds should be light-to-breezy out of the SW. Overnight lows should fall back to the 40s as skies improve but winds pick up to the breezy/gusty category out of the W/NW.

Sunday (April 27) high temperatures should range from upper-50s to upper-60s NNJ to SNJ. Skies should be mixed with sun and clouds. Winds should remain breezy-to-gusty out of the W/NW. The wind presents a fire spread hazard even just after Saturday’s rain. The wind helps to dry out trees and brush. Overnight lows should fall to the 40-50 range NNJ to SNJ as winds calm under clear skies.

An early look at next week (April 28-May 2) indicates mild and breezy conditions. As of now, Monday-Thursday look dry with maybe a frontal system Friday to usher in a nice Saturday-Sunday. Let’s check back in a few days to see if anything has changed. Have a great weekend and please be safe! JC
